DJI Dock 4 vs Dock 3: when does the new system make sense?

The strongest reason to compare DJI Dock 4 with Dock 3 is the work between flights. Dock 4 introduces automatic battery swapping. Dock 3 charges the aircraft in the dock. For a team with long gaps between scheduled missions, that distinction may have less value than it does for a team responding to closely spaced tasks.

The second reason is the aircraft. Dock 4 uses Matrice 5TD, while Dock 3 supports the Matrice 4D series. This is a system comparison, not a suggestion that the aircraft are interchangeable.

These are manufacturer figures, not SkyFlow benchmark results. Maximum flight times are not usable mission durations. Reserve, wind, temperature, accessories, route and battery health affect the work completed before landing.

Battery swapping has value when waiting has a cost

List the expected sorties over a normal day and a demanding day. Record when they occur, how long they take and what happens if the next launch is delayed. That exposes whether a shorter turnaround solves a real operational constraint.

For a scheduled observation with a long quiet period afterward, charging may fit the schedule. For several tasks arriving together, battery readiness and swapping may be more valuable. Neither arrangement removes the need to manage batteries, charging conditions, maintenance and flight authorization.

Do not describe Dock 4 as continuous coverage from one aircraft. The aircraft must still return, land and relaunch. A requirement for uninterrupted observation needs a separate system and operating analysis, including overlapping coverage where appropriate.

Compare the thermal image you can actually use

Matrice 5TD has four times the native thermal pixel count of Matrice 4TD: 1280 × 1024 versus 640 × 512. That is a sensor comparison, not a promise of four times the detection distance or measurement accuracy.

The useful comparison is the required target at the planned distance. Consider field of view, target size, contrast, weather, radiometric export and the software used to interpret results. Processed high-resolution modes and digital zoom should be labelled separately from native sensor resolution.

A team changing platform should also test whether its report templates, retained files and inspection method remain consistent. Better imagery can improve observation without automatically validating a new inspection methodology.

Migration is more than the mounting holes

DJI states that Dock 4 and Dock 3 share a 400 × 400 mm mounting-hole pattern. That can help an engineering review, but it does not make the installation a direct swap.

The new dock has different weight and maximum power specifications. Dock 4 requires the O4 Ground Station, with its own placement, sightline, cabling and connectivity requirements. Assess the structure, electrical supply, grounding, maintenance access and network design again.

Software and account arrangements also deserve review. Decide who owns the devices, who can dispatch missions, how credentials are managed and which integrations need acceptance testing. Obtain a clear migration plan rather than assuming existing settings transfer unchanged.

Existing fleet or new site?

For an existing Dock 3 installation, start with evidence from that site: missed tasks, charging delays, image limitations, downtime and maintenance experience. Use those observations to define the benefit the new system must demonstrate.

For a new site, compare complete proposals against the same mission brief. A lower hardware price can be outweighed by unsuitable camera coverage or an incomplete installation scope. A newer system can also be unnecessary if the older one already meets the defined mission reliably.

Check regional feature availability. Vehicle deployment promoted as “coming soon” is not a capability to include as operational today. Some high-rise deployment features have region-specific coverage; Canadian projects require confirmation.

What to ask before requesting a quote

Ask whether the proposed aircraft, batteries, required ground station, software, installation and training are included. Ask how acceptance will be measured. Set a test mission that represents the actual distance, observation target, network and operator process.

Our Canadian quotation guide offers a scope table for comparing proposals. The site checklist covers the location review.

Discuss Dock 4 with SkyFlow. Pricing and supply configuration are confirmed by quotation, not by the comparison table.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a Matrice 4TD into Dock 4?

No. DJI confirms Matrice 5TD as Dock 4’s compatible aircraft.

Is Dock 4’s 25-second figure its full turnaround time?

No. DJI separately specifies under 45 seconds for landing through battery exchange to relaunch in controlled testing.

Does a matching mounting pattern make the upgrade straightforward?

It is only one consideration. The structure, electrical capacity, ground-station placement, network and operating plan still need review.
