DJI Dock 4 in Canada: a buyer’s guide to the complete system
DJI Dock 4 is a remotely operated aircraft system built around automated battery exchange and the DJI Matrice 5TD. For a Canadian buyer, the first decision is not which accessory to add. It is whether a dock at a defined site will improve the way the organization gathers information, responds to alerts or repeats inspections.
SkyFlow offers DJI Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD by quotation. The proposal should identify the aircraft, required O4 Ground Station, battery inventory, software and deployment responsibilities. A dock-only number is not the cost of a working operation.
This guide uses DJI’s launch documentation dated October 14, 2026 and current manufacturer guidance checked October 16. It is a planning guide, not a report of SkyFlow field testing.
What changed with Dock 4?
The major workflow change is automatic battery swapping. Rather than waiting for the aircraft battery to recharge in place, the dock can install a prepared battery for the next sortie. That matters when the next flight cannot wait for a normal recharge cycle: a developing incident, repeated perimeter observations or several closely spaced inspection tasks.
Keep two figures separate. DJI’s specification lists a swap under 25 seconds, measured from a fully closed cover to a completed swap. Landing-to-relaunch operational turnaround is a separate figure under 45 seconds. Both come from controlled testing. Neither is a guarantee that every alert produces an aircraft overhead within that time.
The practical question is the full response chain: who validates the alert, who authorizes a flight, whether a prepared battery is available, what the weather allows and how long the route to the observation point takes. A fast mechanical step helps one part of that chain.
Confirm the aircraft before comparing packages
DJI confirms Matrice 5TD as Dock 4’s only compatible aircraft. Do not treat Dock 4 as an enclosure upgrade for an existing Matrice 4TD or a Matrice 4T.
The 5TD also does not support manual flight with a handheld remote controller, according to DJI’s FAQ. That is a procurement distinction: a team wanting one aircraft for both dock work and conventional controller-led field deployments should not assume this configuration provides both.
Searches for “Matrice 5,” “M5TD” or “M5T” can mix shorthand with actual model names. Our Matrice 5TD naming and camera guide explains what is confirmed and what should be checked on the quote.
Buy around the information you need
For a facility manager, useful evidence might be a repeatable image of a roof or perimeter at a known time. For an inspection team, it might be the location and visual context of a thermal anomaly. For a public-safety team, it might be a timely scene overview passed to the person directing the response.
Write that deliverable before choosing accessories. Specify whether you need live observation, retained video, temperature-analysis files, still images, a comparison with a previous mission or an integration with another system. These choices affect software, storage, permissions and operator procedures as much as the camera does.
Avoid equating a thermal anomaly with a diagnosis. A hot component, unusual roof pattern or visible disturbance needs interpretation and, where appropriate, follow-up inspection.
Scope the supporting system
The O4 Ground Station is required. It needs an appropriate location and a defined cable and mounting plan. Batteries need a rotation and replacement policy. Software needs named users, access controls, storage rules and an agreed deployment model.
A useful proposal also separates electrical supply, structural work, network provision, installation, commissioning, training and continuing maintenance. Some may be supplied by the customer's contractors. Others may form part of the agreed project. The written scope should make those boundaries clear.
Use our site-readiness checklist and quotation comparison guide before requesting competing proposals.
Plan Canadian operations separately from hardware capability
Remote launch, automated routes and long radio-range specifications do not themselves authorize a flight. Transport Canada distinguishes operating categories and the requirements associated with them. Lower-risk BVLOS under Level 1 Complex has specific conditions, including pilot qualifications, operating under an RPAS Operator Certificate and appropriate aircraft safety assurances. Operations outside the applicable categories may require an SFOC-RPAS.
Do not assume a new aircraft is eligible for every intended operation because it has sensing equipment or a parachute option. Verify the applicable declaration and permissions for the actual aircraft configuration and mission.
What to send SkyFlow
Send the project location, intended observation area, flight frequency, response objective, proposed mounting location, available power and network, software constraints and existing operating arrangements. Include a target timeframe and any procurement requirements. Photographs or drawings of the proposed location help identify questions early.
Request a Dock 4 project quotation. SkyFlow will confirm availability and proposed supply scope in writing; this page does not promise a price, lead time or approval outcome.
